TENNIS, BASEBALL, AND SOFTBALL STAY HOT
BASEBALL WINS ELYRIA UMPIRES 2008 SPORTSMANSHIP TEAM AWARD
The Middie Baseball team saw their 11-game winning streak snapped this week by Vermilion, but they continue to remain in the hunt for a WSC title, as they stand at 15-4, 7-2 in the WSC. The Middies trail conference leading Avon by 1-game with 5 to play in the WSC. The Middies were led this week by junior pitcher Nick Miller, who twirled a 4-hit gem against North Ridgeville, in a 7-0 blanking of the Rangers. The Middies then came back on Wednesday night at The Pipe Yard in Lorain to outlast Firelands, 3-1. The Middies received outstanding pitching from senior Jay Overy, who picked up the win, and sophomore Nick Clark who threw two scoreless innings to notch the save. Seniors Dan Brattoli and Kevin Allen each contributed two hits, while sophomore catcher/outfielder Kyle Koubek added 2 RBI’s for the Middies.
The Softball team had a light week due to the weather, but they kept their drive for a WSC title alive with wins over Firelands and Vermilion. Junior Pitcher Brittany Stone went the distance with 9 strikeouts in the Middies 5-3 win over Firelands. On Thursday, junior shortstop Elizabeth Fazekas added 2 hits, 3 RBI’s, ad a double, and the freshman pitching combination of Sydney Mencke and Danielle Herwig blanked the Sailors 9-0. The Middies are now 14-5, 8-0 in the WSC, and carry a three game lead into the final two weeks of the season.
The Boys’ Tennis Team remained hot as they ran their winning streak to six straight with wins over Garfield, Avon, and Fairview. Number one singles player, senior Sean Pincura, had a strong showing this week, going 3-0, with two singles wins, and a doubles win with teammate Brad Weaver. Senior Nick Docs also teamed with Weaver for two other doubles victories this week. Freshman Patrick Geyser also went 2-1 on the week in singles. The Middies, now 7-5 and 5-4 in the WSC, have battled their way into a third place tie heading into the last week of the season. Midview will take on Bay and North Ridgeville this week, before playing in the WSC Championship Tournament at Oberlin College this weekend.
The Middies track team had a light week this week, as the Margaretta Invitational was paired down due to the weather. Freshman hurdler Alexa Katrinchak continued her outstanding season as she placed in both the 100 m and 300 m hurdles. The track team finishes the regular season off in North Ridgeville this week, and then travels to Olmsted Falls for the Bulldog Relays on Friday. The Middies then return home next Wednesday and Friday for the WSC Track and Field Championships, hosted by Midview in Adelsberg Stadium. Admission to the WSC Meet will be $5 for adults and $4 for students on both Wednesday and Friday. Come on out and watch the Middies battle for the WSC title next week.
Congratulations to Head Coach Terry Hawke and the Baseball team as they have been awarded with the 2008 Elyria Umpires Sportsmanship Award. This is a very high honor given by the umpire association which oversees play in Lorain County. Coach Hawke and his team will be awarded with this honor at the Elyria Area Umpires season end banquet later this month. Congratulations to the baseball team.
Also, please log onto www.ohsaa.org to find the Sectional Tournament draw for both the Baseball and Softball team as they head into tournament play. Statewide brackets will be posted early in the week so that you can follow the Middies on their quest for District titles.
