Congratulations to the Lady Middies for winning NEOEA’s Positive Image Award. Each year, the teacher associations of Northeastern Ohio have the opportunity to nominate members of their unions for NEOEA’s Positive Image Award.  This award recognizes associations or members of an association when their efforts enhance the image of the membership in the community.

This February, Jacki Sliman, president of the Midview Educational Association, nominated the Lady Middies for their work with the 2007 Cleveland Breast Cancer Three-Day Walk for the Cure..  The team was made up of thirteen ladies from Midview High School, ten of whom are members of the Midview Education Association.

The event took place August 17-19, 2007 and required a lot of personal sacrifice, training, and fundraising.  Not only did these ladies walk through rain and the hot August sun (sleeping in tents on the ground each night after walking 20 miles a day), they were each responsible for raising $2,200.00.  They surpassed their goal by collecting more than $25,000.00 for the Susan G. Komen Fund.

One of the fundraisers involved the sale of T-shirts with the Midview name, the pink ribbon symbol, and their cancer walk slogan, “We don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk.”  The ten-teacher team consisted of many ages and backgrounds.  Some were survivors themselves who manned a support team, while others walked in honor of a loved one.

Although they’ve done a good deal to help change lives, their work is not finished.  They have already begun fundraising and planning for this year.  They hope to raise even more money than last year, and because of their infectious spirit, the number of MEA participants has grown this year, as well as their support from the community.
