FRENCH I - French I is designed so that students will attain an acceptable degree of proficiency in the skills of listening, comprehension, speaking, reading and writing at the elementary level. Students will also be introduced to various aspects of French culture. Various methods and techniques are used to accommodate different learning styles. Class activities include acting out short dialogues, learning songs, viewing and discussing videos and films, and studying Paris, its history and monuments.

Recommendation: C average in English

FRENCH II - French II begins with a thorough review of materials covered in French I. Further grammatical structures are then introduced and practiced. Vocabulary range, oral and written expression and use of various tenses are expanded. Special activities include responding to interviews in French, watching and discussing videos and films, writing personal journals, and comparing aspects of French and American life styles and customs. Students also spend time studying and researching various French speaking countries.

Prerequisite: French I, conference with teacher may be required

FRENCH III - Students with interest in French and grades of A, B, C+ in French II are strongly encouraged to take French III. They will have an opportunity to expand their vocabulary, refine their use of the French language and further their knowledge and appreciation of French culture. Class activities include creating and videotaping skits, writing personal journals, and continued study of the history and culture of the French. French III also requires extensive reading in the language. Students will be expected to read 2 books in French.

Prerequisite: French II or approval of instructor

Recommendation: C average in French II

Credit: 1 unit each

FRENCH IV – French IV is a continuation of French III. It is offered contingent on enrollment numbers.

Prerequisite: Completion of French III or approval of instructor.

Elective: 12th grade

Recommendation: C+ average in French III

Credit: 1 unit

SPANISH I - The emphasis of the Spanish I program is in the comprehension of elementary Spanish. Extensive Spanish vocabulary units are presented aurally and visually to the student in a variety of methods. Use is made of vocabulary lists, oral drills, and written/drawing assignments. Students are introduced to certain aspects of Hispanic culture. Speaking, reading, writing and listening to Spanish are developed in the first year program. Oral participation is required. A textbook is used in the 2 nd semester.

SPANISH II – Students will complete the textbook used in Spanish I. Vocabulary units are reviewed and more elements of Spanish culture are introduced. A heavy emphasis on grammatical construction basic to reading, writing, speaking, and understanding Spanish is developed. The material is presented through the use of the textbook, videos, CD's, and readers.

Prerequisite: Spanish I

SPANISH III - Students with interest in Spanish and grades of A, B, or C+ in Spanish II are strongly encouraged to take Spanish III. Grammar is emphasized with coverage of all verb tenses, to promote writing skills. Additional materials to expand cultural knowledge, and reading and speaking skills are covered. Spanish III may be needed for college-bound students who will be taking a foreign language in college. It is also one of the criteria for Honors diploma.

SPANISH IV - Spanish IV involves the review and expansion of grammar skills. More stress is placed on speaking, writing and reading skills. (Reading is emphasized with the purchase and reading of several children's novels.) The class size and ability levels allow for more flexibility for student interests. Besides grammar and writing activities, units covering culture, history and literature are added.

Prerequisite: Spanish III

Elective: 12th grade
