Science

INTEGRATED SCIENCE - Integrated Science is an introduction to the major fields of science.  Topics that are studied are based on the Ohio Academic Content Standards developed by the Ohio Department of Education.  For the ninth grade, the topics that will be covered are: continual development of the universe, processes that shape the earth, introductory chemistry, waves, forces and historical advancements in science. Students will also learn skills that will assist them in taking the Ohio Graduation Test.  FEE REQUIRED

Required:                                  9th graders not enrolled in Biology I

Credit:                                      ½ unit per semester

Length:                                     2 semesters

LIFE SCIENCE - Life Science will emphasize basic biological concepts and principles.  The course will be comprehensive in its investigations of living organisms.  The student will study areas that include: scientific measurement; classification; cells; plants; animals and organ systems. FEE REQUIRED

This course is designed for students who are not college bound.

Prerequisites:                            Integrated Science; teacher recommendation

Credit:                                      ½ unit per semester

Length:                                     2 semesters

BIOLOGY I - Biology is the science that studies all living organisms, and their interrelationships.  The many concepts and principles of biology will be covered and emphasized.  The student will be presented a course of study that includes:  the structure and functions of cells; DNA; genetics; the history of life; classification; microbiology and a detailed study of the five kingdoms of organisms, especially plants and animals.  The student will also be responsible for other independent research work that is assigned.  Laboratory work, including dissection, is an essential and scheduled part of this course. FEE REQUIRED

Required:                                  Advanced 9th graders or Integrated Science

Credit:                                      ½ unit per semester

Length:                                     2 semesters

PHYSICAL GEOLOGY - Physical Geology will explore the forces that contribute to change the earth's physical features.  The physical construction of the earth will be studied in association with the erosional forces that are continuously working to change those physical features.  Topics that will be covered include: rocks and minerals; topographic maps; water and weathering; glaciers; plate tectonics; volcanism; earthquakes; mountains and earth history.  FEE REQUIRED

Prerequisite:                              Life Science or Biology I

Elective:                                    11th & 12th grades

Credit:                                      ½ unit per semester

Length:                                     2 semesters

CHEMISTRY - Chemistry is an introduction to the fundamentals of the structure composition and reaction of matter.  The laws, principles, concepts and theories relative to matter and its makeup will be emphasized.  The student will also be involved in problem solving and work using the scientific method.  Topics that will be covered include: atomic theory and structure; chemical composition; periodic law; bonding; gas laws; kinetic molecular theory; solutions; mole concept; acids and bases.  This course of study will be accompanied by laboratory work to help the student understand how chemical principles and concepts are developed from observations and data.  This class is strongly recommended for college prep students.  FEE REQUIRED

Prerequisites:                            Biology I (C average or better) &

                                                   Algebra (C average or better)

Elective:                                    Advanced 10th graders, 11th & 12th grades

Credit:                                      ½ unit per semester

Length:                                     2 semesters

BIOLOGY II - Biology II involves an in-depth study of selected areas of the biological sciences.  A great deal of responsibility is placed on the student in regards to the course work.  A major portion of work consists of individual and group projects, detailed investigations, extensive lab work, practical evaluations and a research project.  Areas that will be covered include:  biological chemistry; the anatomy of a representative mammal (dissection); human physiology; embryology; plant and animal tissues.  The student must realize that much out of class study will need to be done to successfully complete this course.  FEE REQUIRED

Prerequisites:                           Biology I (B average or better) &

                                                  Chemistry (B average or better)

Elective:                                    11th & 12th grades

Credit:                                      ½ unit per semester

Length:                                     2 semesters

PHYSICS - Physics is an introductory course in which the laws, principles, and concepts of natural phenomena are studied.  Laboratory work, videos, and demonstrations are provided to help the student gain insight and to make use of the laws of mechanics, structure of matter, heat, sound, light, and electricity.  The student must realize that much out of class study will need to be done to successfully complete this course.

FEE REQUIRED
