In her new book, My Shining Star: Raising a Child Who is Ready to Learn (Scholastic Press, 2005), Wells offers advice on ways parents can help prepare their children for school. “All children bring to school what they learn at home,” writes Wells. “This book is about creating a home full of harmony and the preparation of a successful child.”
Using a mixture of simple text and illustrations to support her points, Wells outline 10 key principles in preparing children for school.

Wells is a passionate advocate for literacy and education. In researching My Shining Star: Raising A Child Who is Ready to Learn, she spoke with hundreds of teachers to hone in on their concerns about behaviors that affect the learning environment in schools. These conversations helped her develop her 10 key principles sure to help any child succeed in school and in life. These principles guide parents to build a home that is harmonious, is supportive, and fosters self-esteem.
