The Last Fugitive Slave

On Thursday, March 12th, the class of 2023 enjoyed a presentation about the amazing story of Lucy Bagby, a runaway slave who was captured in Cleveland as abolitionists tried to set her free.  Through a generous grant from the Nordson Corporation Foundation, the class of 2022 not only got to see the story of Lucy Bagby unfold in front of them but several members of the 8th grade class acted out parts of Ms. Bagby's struggles to be a free woman in the North.  The actor from Kulture Kids painted a vivid picture through song and acting of just what a runaway slave faced as they tried to reach the freedom from slavery.  The actor, Lucy Bagby come alive right in front of your eyes.  From the second she walked onto the stage, she was Lucy Bagby.  This powerful story of Lucy's quest for freedom fits perfectly into the current 8th grade social studies classes as they study the Civil War, the Underground Railroad, and the Emancipation Proclamation.
