May Named Northeast Ohio Athletic Director of the Year
Midview Local School District’s Athletic Director Dan May was named the 2019 Northeast Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s (NEOIAA) Athletic Director of the Year. The awards ceremony took place Sunday (April 7) evening as part of the NEOIAAA Spring Conference.
May, who has been Midview’s athletic director for the past six years and oversees the district’s 22 athletic programs, graduated from Avon Lake High School in 1999. He has been an athletic administrator for the past 16 years, including the last eight as an interscholastic athletics administrator.
“The thing I enjoy most about being an interscholastic athletics director is the friendly competition and the opportunity it provides for student-athletes to experience success,” said May. “Success comes in many forms—not just wins and losses—and the reaction a kid has when they achieve a personal record or make a great play to help the team is a reminder to everyone that sports are supposed to be fun.”
Prior to working at Midview, May was the athletic director for Clearview Local Schools for two years and was the Sports Information Director at his alma mater, Marietta College, for eight years. While at Marietta, May played on the college’s baseball team for four years, earning All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) in 2002 and being named Academic All-OAC in 2002 and 2003.
May graduated cum laude from Marietta College with a Bachelor of Arts in Management in 2003 and then went on to earn his Master’s in Corporate Media from Marietta in 2009.
As the former Sports Information Director at Marietta College, May undertook all of the media relations responsibilities associated with the athletic department. He provided coverage for its 2006 and 2011 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III National Championship in baseball. He also hosted a variety of OAC Championships, the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship and the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Baseball Championships.
During May’s tenure at Midview, the district has hosted six Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division I district volleyball tournaments, as well as district tournaments in boys basketball and track and field. Midview has also hosted various West Shore Conference and Southwestern Conference Tournaments.
May has served two terms as president of the Lorain County Athletic Administrators Association (LCAAA) and was named the LCAAA Athletic Director of the Year in 2017-18. May also oversees boys golf for the Southwestern Conference and has raised over $50,000 for upgrades to the district’s weight room and digitized Midview High School’s athletic history.
“It is my hope that Midview athletics continue to develop high-character student athletes who build upon their success and failures to be positive contributors to the community,” said May. “For most of our kids, the last time that play organized sports will be at Midview. We want them to enjoy it but also reap the benefits of playing education-based athletics.”
In addition to his other awards and achievements, Dan was awarded the Northeast Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NEOIAAA) Horizon Award in 2013 and the NEOIAAA Meritorious Service Award in 2018.
“We are so fortunate to have Dan May as our athletic director, as he does an outstanding job making sure our student athletes have a fantastic experience practicing, competing and team-building every season,” said Superintendent Dr. Bruce Willingham. “This is a wonderful honor for Dan, and we are proud of him for earning this prestigious recognition.”
