Summer Message

The 2017-2018 school year has come to a close and it has been another excellent one for the Midview Local Schools.

This year, a major focus for the district was to expand and grow academic programs. We are excited to be able to expand the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Gateway to Technology pro- gram to the sixth-grade level. Next year, all sixth-grade students will study De- sign & Modeling.

At the high school, we will also offer additional Advanced Placement courses, expand the PLTW computer science program, as well as the Career Tech Business program with the addition of Business Foundations.

Internally, the District Leadership Team has completed the first draft of the Midview Culture Handbook. The handbook will be presented at the June Board of Education meeting and we plan to roll it out to all district staff at opening day Convocation. The goal of the hand- book is to improve relationships, work better together and strengthen connections throughout the district. I would like to thank the 20-member team of teachers and administrators for their time and ideas in creating the Culture Handbook.

As a district, we are also working to align our technology plan with our instructional plan so we can expand the use of technology with an instructional focus. For example, some classrooms may need to be more mobile, making Chromebooks a good fit for them, whereas others may need a more high- powered computer. Aligning these two plans allows us to purchase technology based on instructional needs. This added focus should help us provide more appropriate technology for our staff and students to use during instruction.

Another major focus this year has been student safety. Recently, the district conducted a safety audit of all district buildings and the campus with the help of Homeland Security and local first responders. Through the audit, we tried to identify potential safety concerns and will improve our emergency operations plan based on those areas. While the district is not able to share the details of the plan for safety reasons, we are looking at making some updates to our safety procedures that will be visible to the public once we receive the final report from Homeland Security.

We also believe in being proactive when it comes to our students’ mental health and well-being, which is why we have hired a part-time social worker. We have students who are struggling socially and emotionally, and we are looking for ways to better support them and their families. The social worker has the experience to intervene early, provide students with the support they need and connect families with resources in the community so we can take a proactive approach to supporting our students as early as possible.

This year, we had a focused and forward-thinking mindset to help our students achieve and experience more. We were able to do all of this without needing any additional funds because we carefully staffed so that we would save costs through attrition while maintaining a high-quality education for our students.

I am incredibly lucky to work in a place like Midview, where everyone is dedicated to ensuring our students grow and succeed. I hope everyone has a fun, safe and relaxing summer.

See you in August!
