Welcome 2018-2019 School Year!

Welcome back!

I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing summer. I love seeing everyone back in the buildings and the campus come alive with lessons, clubs and activities, practices and more!

I would like to thank everyone – students, teachers, staff, parents and administrators – for making it an excellent start to the 2018-2019 school year.

We have a lot to look forward to this year.

Academically, we have expanded the Project Lead the Way Program at the high school and expanded the Gateway to Technology program down to sixth grade at the middle school. We also added new career and technical education courses at the high school focusing on business and computer science.

During the 2017-2018 school year, the district conducted a safety audit of all district buildings and the campus with the help of Homeland Security and local first responders. Through the audit, we were able to identify potential safety concerns and improve our emergency operations plan based on those areas. While the district is not able to share all details of the plan for safety reasons, parents, students and community members will see a number of security updates for the 2018-2019 school year. Midview High School will see improved security and additional security cameras throughout the building. In?all buildings, Midview is implementing a new visitor management system where all visitors will have to scan their ID before entering a building. Additionally, the district will be using a new reporting system for students and others to use to report bullying and threats.

In addition to safety, we also believe in being proactive when it comes to our students’ mental health and well-being, which is why we have hired a part-time social worker. We have students who are struggling socially and emotionally, and we are looking for ways to better support them and their families. The social worker has the experience to intervene early, provide students with the support they need and connect families with resources in the community so we can take a proactive approach to supporting our students as early as possible.

This year, the Board of Education will be working on an updated strategic plan for our district. To ensure we create a plan that meets the needs of all of our stakeholders, we will be engaging with parents, staff and the community. Details on this will be provided at a later date.

I hope everyone has a great school year!

Superintendent Dr. Bruce Willingham
