Midview’s Jonny Manning named 2020 Lorain County Mr. Basketball

Midview High School senior standout Jonny Manning postseason accolades keep piling up. On Tuesday (March 17), Manning was named the 2020 Lorain County Mr. Basketball, presented annually by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Elyria.

Jonny ManningThe Lorain County Boys Basketball All-Star Game on March 22 was slated to be a Midview celebration inside Kubuski Gymnasium. It is the annual crowning of Lorain County Mr. Basketball. The Lorain County Boys Basketball Coaches Association also planned to unveil the event’s new name, which is “Troy DiFranco All-Star Night featuring the Gene Legeza Classic.” Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus outbreak, All-Star game activities were canceled.

Manning is the second boys basketball player to earn Lorain County Mr. Basketball since the award was established in 1975. Midview Hall of Famer Anthony Stacey took home the award in 1995.

Along with Mr. Basketball, Manning, a Lake Erie College commit, was named All-Northeast Lakes District first team, Lorain County Division I Player of the Year and Southwestern Conference Most Valuable Player. In addition, this afternoon he was named All-Ohio third team, making him just the sixth in program history and first since Wes Davic in 2013 to earn that achievement.

“Jonny is a coach’s dream,” Head Basketball Coach Jim Brabenec said. “Jonny is a fantastic basketball player but has been a better leader and role model for our program. He has garnered numerous individual accolades but he would tell you that the ones that are most memorable are the ones accomplished by the team. This is the type of young man that Jonny has become.”

Manning averaged 17.6 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.5 blocks in 2020. He led the Middies to the Southwestern Conference Championship, which was the program’s 12th title in various leagues and first SWC crown since 2016. He become the fourth Middie to eclipse the 1,000-point career mark on February 14. Manning finished third all-time with 1,097 points and second all-time with 746 rebounds.
