THE WEATHER AT WEST ELEMENTARY

On April 27, 2012, the 4th grade classes at Midview West Elementary had the pleasure of having Christine Ferreira from News Channel 5 come and speak to them about weather.  Christine told the students about what she had to do to become a meteorologist.  She also spoke to the students about tornado safety, what tornadoes can do, and what they should have in their home as an emergency preparation kit.   In addition, she showed pictures of different types of clouds and what weather they bring.  She also shared her experiences with hurricanes, along with pictures showing damage from Hurricane Andrew, Katrina, and Rita.  The students enjoyed the presentation very much and and were excited to meet a local news person.  Christine left the students with these parting words, "Always look up!"

The second graders from Midview West had the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature in their classroom by the generous donation of Ross Environmental Services which provide teachers with grant opportunities. The second graders had a visit from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and were given a 50-minute, hands on science program about the adaptations of Ohio Animals. The students were able to explore how Ohio animals adapt to their changing habitats by studying real animal skulls and furs from the Museum collections. The students LOVED touching all the different furs!!!

MIDVIEW WEST IS NAMED A SCHOOL OF PROMISE

Midview West was named a School of Promise by the Ohio Department of Education.  We were all proud of this honor and wanted to celebrate with our students and also reinforce the individual and group goals that we need to work towards to continue to excel.  A committee of 3 fourth graders met with Mrs. Hamilton and planned Keep the Promise Day which was held on Friday, Feb. 24.  The student committee explained the day to the entire student body on a live broadcast.  This was very exciting.  On this day, we all wore Midview colors and Midview cookies were passed out at lunch.  During the week, each student received an “M” to decorate and hang in the halls.  Each student also received a goal card.  Students then wrote an individual goal on their card.  Goals ranged from listening to the teacher to trying my best to studying harder.  These goals will be a daily reminder that we need to try our best every day.

RECYCLE CENTER

The third grade students at Midview West traveled to the Oberlin Recycling Center this week. While there, they were able to ride up to the top of the landfill and look inside! They learned that 400 trucks dump garbage in there every single day! The landfill is big enough to fit all of Midview District's schools inside of it several times! After the landfill, students got to see the sorting process of glass, plastic, cans, and paper inside the actual recycling center. They learned about what can be recycled and what has to be put into the landfill. They also learned that the average person produces 5 pounds of garbage each day! They are all going to do their best to abide by the 3 R's....Reduce, Reuse, and RECYCLE!

 4th Grade Helps the Homeless

The eager students of Midview West Elementary School located in Grafton, Ohio had a challenge set before them during the weeks preceding Winter Break. The challenge was to obtain countless M & M’s to be redistributed as a fundraiser to help the Haven Homeless Shelter located in Lorain, Ohio. This shelter serves the residents of Lorain County.

The fourth grade students created a business, The M & M Workshop, of selling M&M’s to homerooms throughout the school. Each homeroom nominated one person to serve on the Board of Directors. The Board of directors set the price and quantity of M&M’s, elected two artists to create an advertisement that was distributed to students and their families, and the Board Member had to be the leader in the classroom. All 4th grade students were selected for several different positions, including bankers, advertisers, sales, laborers, and distributors. These fourth grade students learned about all factors of production.

Thanks to generous donations of M&M’s from our fourth grade parents, the company successfully raised $376 for The Haven Center. Sandy Humphrey, Director of Operations, met with all fourth grade classes to discuss and answer questions about homelessness. The Board of directors presented the check to Mrs. Humphrey to be used for the harsh conditions of winter. The children felt gratified to learn that our school is only one of two learning facilities in Lorain County that donate to the homeless shelter.

Mrs. Kacsandi (1st grade), Mrs. Molnar (4th grade), and Mrs. Sanders (3rdgrade) classes celebrated Thanksgiving a little early with a Friendship Feast on Friday, November 20. Along with 6 parent volunteers, more than 75 children enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving feast with all the trimmings.

Mrs. Molnar's class, with the assistance of a parent helper, made the centerpieces for the tables. Each class made their own placemat. All 3 classes sat together to enjoy the feast.

VETERANS' DAY

An annual Veterans’ Day tradition at Midview West is the displaying of the names and pictures of West relatives that have served, or are currently serving, in the Armed Forces. We display a “Wall of Stars” with these names and we also have the pictures displayed in the shape of a heart. This display also includes a flag from an army base in Iraq. This flag was given to the students at Midview West by Danielle Harris, the daughter of Midview employee Dorothy Redwood, while she was home on a leave from serving in Iraq.

PROJECT DICTIONARIES

On Friday, Oct. 1, Bill Foglyano, Robin Foglyano, and Kathy Amos from the Elyria Elks #465 continued their tradition of distributing dictionaries to every third grade child. Along with the distribution, the children are told of all of the helpful information that can be found in these dictionaries. They look for the longest word and are delighted to find it. We have heard that many high school students still have these dictionaries and remember this day as a highlight of their third grade year. We are very appreciative of this gift from the Elyria Elks!
