On Thursday, May 7, Midview Local Schools will celebrate the 20th anniversary of ARTastic Fest. What began as a small art showcase has grown into a signature district event—one that continues to shine a spotlight on student creativity, expression, and achievement in the visual arts.
ARTastic was founded in 2006 by a group of six educators—Mrs. Judy Otten, Mr. Dale Leadenham, Mr. Dan Elber, Mrs. Heather Maxwell, Mrs. Bridgette Vargo, and Mrs. Tara White—who sought to provide students with a platform to share their artwork and bring the community together in celebration of art education.
The first show was held as a small Saturday morning event at Midview East Intermediate, using borrowed display panels from Elyria City Schools.
Within two years, ARTastic moved to Midview High School with the support of then-Director of Administrative Services, Mr. Robert Maxwell. The larger space allowed for expanded displays and the addition of a senior showcase. The district’s investment in its own display panels soon followed, allowing ARTastic to grow into the district-wide celebration it is today.
In 2010, the ARTastic Scholarship was established to support students pursuing art-related studies after graduation. Since then, approximately $16,000 has been awarded to graduates, extending the event’s impact.
Today, ARTastic Fest features nearly 1,000 pieces of artwork from students in grades PK–12. From early elementary projects to advanced high school portfolios, the event showcases the evolution of student artistic development across the district.
“I am truly honored to have been part of this art show for the past twenty years,” said Heather Maxwell, Midview Middle School Visual Arts Teacher. “Being involved for two decades has meant witnessing generations of students grow in confidence, creativity, and self-expression through their artwork. Each year brings new ideas and perspectives that reflect the dedication behind art education. This milestone is not just a celebration of time, but also the relationships built and the lasting impact it has on our school community.”
As Midview celebrates 20 years of ARTastic, we are grateful to the many families, friends, staff, and community members who have joined us in celebrating our students and their artwork year after year. This long-standing tradition reflects what has always been true in Midview: our community shows up for its students.
ARTastic Fest will take place on Thursday, May 7, from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the Midview High School Kubuski Gymnasium.
