Super Star

GRAFTON, OHIO (MAY 04, 2022)  – Midview Local School District was one of 22 districts to receive a Breakfast & Beyond Super Star award from the Ohio School Breakfast Challenge. Midview was recognized for its excellence, innovation and collaborative approach to maximizing student participation and access to the school meal programs.

This school year, Midview Local School District aimed to increase access and participation in the school breakfast and lunch program by implementing new serving strategies that included extended mealtime slots at the high school and classroom food delivery at the elementary schools. They also offered new food choices that met the needs of students and teachers in each building. The district provided breakfast and lunch to all students at no cost.

The nutrition department collaborated with building-level administrators, teachers and other school staff to promote breakfast and lunch through flyers, online menus and daily announcements. They also worked with external community partners to develop initiatives that support students’ health.

Thanks to their winning strategies, 100 more elementary school students eat breakfast daily, and lunch participation increased from 256 students to over 300 per day. At the middle and high school levels, more than 100 students eat breakfast daily, along with 200 additional high school students and more than 60 middle school students eating lunch.

“We have seen tremendous results this year regarding increased participation in our breakfast and lunch programs,” said Midview Superintendent Bruce Willingham. “Our district has found creative ways to promote our meal programs and get our students and staff excited about the delicious and nutritious food we provide each day. We are honored to have our initiatives recognized by the state of Ohio.”

School districts that submitted a Breakfast & Beyond story received a “Super Star” electronic medallion to place on their school website, menus and other community-focused communications. Schools achieving this honor were recognized by the Ohio School Breakfast Challenge partners, Ohio Education Associations and their membership, and additional education, health and child-focused organizations.
