In line with Ohio Attendance Requirements, Ohio school districts are required to monitor student attendance closely and partner with families to address the underlying causes of missed school.
At Midview, we see this not only as a requirement but as a commitment. We want every student to feel supported, encouraged, and motivated to be in school each day. Consistent attendance is the foundation of learning and plays a vital role in helping students succeed both in the classroom and beyond.
How We Support Attendance:
Our attendance team, including Mike Young, Attendance Officer, and Jennifer Gates, Coordinator of Student Supports, works closely with building administrators to review attendance each week and connect with students and families.
We know that attendance challenges can look different for every student and family. Our goal is to recognize concerns early, keep communication open, and provide support based on each family's individual circumstances and needs.
One of the most important parts of raising awareness about attendance is helping families understand how quickly absences can add up. Here is a look at the attendance milestones we monitor and how we approach each one:
45 Hours (Approximately 7 Days): Early Awareness. Families receive an initial attendance notification. This is an opportunity to bring awareness to missed instructional time and encourage conversations about the importance of consistent attendance.
90 Hours: Additional Support. When absences reach this level, we work with families to better understand attendance patterns, identify potential barriers, and develop an individualized attendance intervention plan.
30 Consecutive Hours, 42 Hours in One Month, or 72 Hours in One School Year of Unexcused Absences: Attendance Intervention. These are Ohio's habitual truancy thresholds. Our team works with students and families to address barriers, establish attendance goals, and monitor progress. When necessary, additional steps may be taken in accordance with Ohio law.
We understand that some absences are unavoidable because of illness, emergencies and other circumstances. At the same time, every day in school truly matters. Being present helps students stay connected to their teachers and classmates, keep up with learning and build strong habits for the future.
As a reminder, families should call the school whenever their child is absent and provide a doctor’s note when applicable to ensure the absence is recorded correctly. Families are also encouraged to review the list of excused absences in our student handbook.
Making Attendance FUN!
At Midview, we will take every opportunity to recognize our students! When it comes to attendance, that means celebrating students for being Present, Punctual, and Proud (our official attendance slogan, if you will)!
In addition to the ongoing efforts of our attendance team and each building’s PBIS incentives, Midview will continue several district-wide attendance initiatives:
Monthly: The grade level with the highest attendance will enjoy a special treat sponsored by a local business partner.
Quarterly: Students with two or fewer absences will receive a coupon to a local restaurant, and those with perfect attendance will be entered into a building-wide raffle.
Yearly: The school with the best overall attendance will earn the title of All-Star Attendance Champion and proudly display a traveling trophy.
This year, we are excited to also continue our partnership with Stay in the Game, a statewide initiative that brings schools, families, and communities together to improve student attendance. Through this partnership, we have access to some pretty cool opportunities and perks with the Cleveland Browns. One of our first big incentives is our Cleveland Browns Ticket Raffle! From September 28 through December 4, students can earn raffle entries for attending school throughout the week. Students can earn up to 10 entries, with four lucky winners receiving Cleveland Browns tickets!
We look forward to a great year of continuing to make sure every Middie is present, learning, and on track for success!
